The Independent Study Basic Hunter Education Course is an alternative format to a traditional classroom course. Students enrolled in a n independent study course, are guided by an instructor team and take the same course as students in a traditional course but will work independently to complete some of the essential coursework on their own. The homework is only part of the course. Students must also attend two class sessions and PASS the final exam as well.
The main advantage with Independent Study is that this format offers flexibility. Students learn some of the material, at their own pace, on their own time, without attending several classes.
This format does require as much time and effort as a traditional course and students will need to allot 6-8 hours of their time to complete the necessary coursework. Independent Study is a good option for students with tight schedules and who are self-motivated, conscientious and learn well on their own. Minors: Students under the age of 18 to attend a Hunter Education course. Parents/Guardians are invited and encouraged to stay during the class sessions.
Please note that this format may be difficult for students less than 16 years of age unless they receive guidance while completing the home assignment. Step-by-step Instructions. Attend the first in-class session: Obtain instruction on course requirements, receive study materials including the student manual and learn about hunting laws and hunter ethics. Complete and submit the necessary homework: Options are explained in detail during the first in-class session.
Participate in the field day and take the final exam: At the field day, students participate in a number of hands-on activities. Class participation and performance is a factor in determining successful completion of the course. Students are expected to demonstrate safe gun handling and a mature and responsible attitude toward firearms, people and natural resources.
There is also a multiple choice, final written exam. Students must pass the exam with a score of 80% or better. Upon successful completion, graduates will receive a Certificate of Completion via postal mail recognized in all U.S. States, Canada, and Mexico.
Field day instructions You must pass in your completed homework at the start of your field day in order to participate and take the exam. If you do not bring your completed homework, you will be turned away. Do not bring any firearms or ammunition; all necessary equipment will be supplied. Dress for the weather. Activities can occur outdoors rain or shine. Bring a lunch, snacks, and plenty to drink and/or a reusable water bottle.

Our hunter and trapper education programs are designed for every age and ability, and are run by some of Ohio’s best and most knowledgeable hunters and trappers. While hunter education is a vital part of becoming an Ohio hunter, new hunters also have the option of hunting with an before taking a hunter education course.
If you are a first time hunter and you would like to participate in a mentored small game hunt with an Ohio National Wild Turkey Federation Save the Habitat Save the Hunt hunting mentor, please contact the Ohio NWTF Coordinator. The Division of Wildlife offers three types of hunter certification courses: Instructor-Led Course Instructor-led courses last about 8-12 hours, and take place in a classroom environment. Certified volunteers and Division of Wildlife staff teach the courses. They are specially trained and highly qualified to help you learn. Though it varies by instructor and location, most classes take place over two days. Study materials will be provided in the class, but you will need to bring a pencil or pen and a highlighter.
Your instructor will cover a range of topics, from conservation, safety, and ethics to the proper handling of shotguns, handguns, bowhunting gear, and more. You should not bring firearms or archery equipment to class - all necessary equipment will be provided. Once you've completed the course work, you will be given a 100-question test which includes a multiple choice questions. A student must score 75% or higher on the test to pass and obtain certification.
Make sure you select Classroom Home-Study Course The Home Study Course is available to Ohio residents. Students must first complete the online course. This online course will take approximately four hours to complete, but you may stop and pick up where you left off in the course as you please. There are quizzes at the end of each unit. Once you complete all units, you will need to pass a final exam to receive a voucher to attend the final, in-person classroom portion.
The cost of this option is $15 payable once you pass the final exam and prior to printing the voucher. This fee is collected by the course vendor, not the ODNR Division of Wildlife. The final classroom session usually lasts 3-4 hours, and will be led by an ODNR Division of Wildlife employee or certified instructor volunteer. It will include firearm safety training and other topics. The completion voucher provided at the end of the online course must be brought to this final classroom session or you will not be able to complete the course. In these classroom sessions, you will take the same 100-question final certification test as the instructor-led course. Be sure to bring a pen or pencil so you can take the test.
Make sure you select Online Course Completion Online Hunter Education Online Hunter Education is for Ohio residents 12 years of age or older. This version of hunter education allows students to complete the entire course online. This online course will take approximately eight hours to complete, but you may stop and pick up where you left off in the course as you please. There are quizzes at the end of each unit. You must pass the unit quiz to proceed to the next unit.
Students must pass a final exam to receive certification. There is a fee of $15 paid to the online vendor once you complete the course and pass the final course exam. National Bowhunter Education Foundation (NBEF) Online Bowhunter Education Course Ohio does not require bowhunter education, but the NBEF Bowhunter Education course is required to bowhunt in at least 11 states and many countries. This online Bowhunter Education course is only for Ohio residents (9 years of age or older) and meets this bowhunter education requirement.
The online course takes approximately eight hours to complete, but you may stop and pick up where you left off in the course at any time. There are quizzes at the end of each unit, and you must pass the unit quiz to proceed to the next unit. Students must pass a final exam to receive certification. There is a fee of $30 paid to the online course vendor once you complete the course and pass the final course exam. Complete Ohio’s online hunter education course at and email a copy of the certificate to with a request to attend the hunter education instructor academy. The interested candidate will be emailed the link to complete the Ohio background check for hunter and trapper education instructors. When these two items are completed, the interested candidate will receive confirmation from the ODNR Division of Wildlife. They may then register for the Instructor Training Academy that is convenient for them.
